A Comparative Analysis of Secondary Intelligibles, Time, and Space in the Philosophies of Kant and Mulla Sadra

Abstract :
This study aims to compare the perspectives of Mulla Sadra and Kant on the problem of time and space to explore intellectual affinities between these two philosophers in their understanding of these concepts. Such a comparison is conducted despite the lack of substantial overlap in analysis fundamentals, as their goal and, sometimes, their methods are similar or identical. Mulla Sadra and Kant fundamentally different epistemological foundations regarding time and space, leads to divergent methodologies and makes a direct comparison of their views challenging. However, certain points of convergence can be discerned in their discussions. For instance, both philosophers, in some sense, regard knowledge itself as self-evident and independent of proof. The concept of essential precedence (in Islamic philosophy) in knowledge appears to be akin to Kant’s a priori and transcendental notions, which can be inferred from his exposition on transcendental philosophy. It appears plausible to interpret Mulla Sadra’s secondary intelligibles as Kantian a priori cognitions (though not necessarily transcendental ones) and to trace both back to a shared epistemic perspective. Moreover, what Kant considers the function of pure reason (Sense-Independent in Sadr’s terms) can be aligned with Mulla Sadra’s apprehension of non-sensible meanings, revealing a deeper conceptual proximity between the two thinkers.
